Orphanage Kids Experience the Joy of Robotics with M3D GO

Technology has the power to inspire, educate, and create unforgettable experiences. This touching story by Shayaan Haider, a LUMS student and science communicator, captures the moment when children at an orphanage experienced robotics for the first time, turning an ordinary day into an unforgettable experience of learning and joy.
A Day That Words Can’t Describe – Bringing Science & Joy to an Orphanage
Some experiences leave you speechless, and last Sunday was one of them. As part of my university’s science society, I visited an orphanage with a group of volunteers, carrying a collection of science experiments to share the wonders of the world with the children. From watching the sun through a telescope to the foamy excitement of the elephant’s toothpaste experiment, the day was packed with curiosity and excitement.
But for me, the most heartwarming moment came when I introduced them to M3D GO. The children were instantly captivated by the small tracked robot, their eyes lighting up with excitement as I explained that we had built it ourselves and that it could be programmed to do whatever we wanted. The older kids got a taste of coding it using Scratch, while the younger ones joyfully drove it around, experimenting with the dumper and forklift functions like a real-life game.
Then came Abdullah, a curious 7-year-old, who asked, “Can it climb up a slide?” What followed was pure magic. We tested the bot in different ways—first as it was, then with rubber bands on the tracks for extra grip, and finally by maneuvering it diagonally in a zigzag pattern. Each attempt brought it higher and higher. The kids erupted in cheers, their excitement growing with each experiment. It was a moment of discovery, play, and learning all wrapped into one.
But perhaps the most touching part of the day was how some of the younger children believed the bot could actually hear them. Every time I changed the emoji on the screen or displayed their name with a greeting, they were convinced the bot was listening and responding. Their laughter, their wonder, and the sheer joy in their eyes—it’s something that’s impossible to put into words.
This wasn’t just about science or technology. It was about connection, about bringing a sense of wonder and joy to children who deserve every bit of happiness. Watching them engage, experiment, and see possibilities beyond what they had imagined was an experience that I will carry with me forever.
Some moments can’t be measured. Some feelings can’t be explained. But that day, in that orphanage, with those children and a tiny robot—something truly special happened, that will help keep my spirits up in an otherwise cold and fast-paced world.
Ad Astra,
